This Course is designed for individuals wishing to operate or currently operating as Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP). The Maritime Security Operative (MSO) qualification is a qualification based directly on the new international standard for Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs): ISO28007 [Guidelines for PMSCs providing privately contracted armed security personnel (PCASP) on board ships].

The threat of attack from pirates and terrorists is a very real one for vessels passing through global waters that are designated as high risk areas. This course is specifically designed for crew who may encounter a security or safety problem as they transit hostile environments and adverse conditions. It includes an introduction to the background of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), the roles of the company security officer (CSO) and Maritime Security Officer (MSO), security requirements and security administration.

The program covers security drills, security exercises, crowd management techniques, security protection and emergency preparedness.

This qualification is based directly on the competencies in the ISO PAS 28007 and has also been mapped to the full training syllabus for ‘Personnel in Designated Security Duties’ (PDSD).

 

The PDSD requirements, as laid down in the 2010 Manila amendments to STCW PDSD, represent approx.  25% of the total 8269 syllabus. 

The qualification is also suitable for those wishing to operate as an unarmed maritime security operative on board ships.

It is aimed at Ship Security Operatives (SSOs) wishing to operate or currently operating as Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP).

  • The importance of ship security and the roles and responsibilities of organisations and individuals involved in it.

  • Assessing security risk, threat and vulnerability to the ship, its personnel, cargo and operations.

  • Understanding the capabilities and limitations of security methods, equipment and systems.

  • How to implement a ship security plan and related regulatory requirements.

  • How to determine the effectiveness of current security arrangements, procedures and equipment.

  • Understanding how to promote security awareness and vigilance on board ship.
